FAQ

Read on for answers to the most frequently asked questions about Kappa Kappa Gamma

  • What is Kappa?

Kappa Kappa Gamma is a national sorority with 132 chapters across North America. Kappas are fun, friendly, supportive sisters. Eta Theta brings together a diverse group of women who are leaders in a variety of campus organizations.

  • What do Kappas do?

Every semester we have one formal social event, such as our annual Sapphire Ball, and several other social events such as theme parties at local restaurants, tailgates, or mixers with other social groups. We also hold a variety of sisterhood activities. In the past our events have included a weekend Nantucket retreat, apple-picking, weekly lunches and T.V. viewings, renting out Loews Cineplex in the square, and bowling. Kappas also volunteer for our national philanthropy Reading is FUNdamental and take part in volunteer opportunities throughout Boston.  One of the greatest tings about being a Kappa is that membership is for a lifetime. There are numerous ways to get involved as an alumni, and there are alumni chapters in cities across the globe!

  • When was Kappa founded?

The first Kappa chapter was founded at Monmouth College in Illinois, on October 13, 1870 by our six Founding Sisters:  Hannah Jeannette Boyd, Mary Moore Stewart (Nelson, Field), Anna Elizabeth Willits (Pattee), Mary Louise Bennett (Boyd), Martha Louisa Stevenson (Miller), and Susan Burley Walker (Vincent).

  • What is the time commitment?

The time commitment as a Kappa varies greatly.  Each member is expected to attend weekly chapter meetings, and help out on any one of our many committees.  Members who are interested in getting more involved in the chapter have the opportunity to serve on Council and serve the chapter in a variety of ways; we offer girls the opportunity to do anything from designing Kappa gear, to planning our annual Professor Tea, to upholding our sorority's standards and ideals.  Another way to spend more time as a Kappa is to attend any of the various social, philanthropic and sisterhood events that Council plans. You can make Kappa as big a part of your life as you'd like!

  • How many girls are in the Harvard Chapter now?

Before recruitment each year, the Eta Theta Chapter typically has about 60 members. Each February, during recruitment, we welcome about 20-30 new girls.

  • Do I have a better chance of getting in as a Freshman?

None of the chapters have a freshman class, so they will be looking to fill that need. However, during recruitment, we also are looking for sophomores and juniors who are compatible with the chapter. Kappa seeks to bring in any girl who we feel will add to Eta Theta Chapter regardless of graduation class!

  • I have heard that legacies always get chosen during recruitment. Is that true?

A legacy is a woman who has a grandmother, mother, or sister who is a Kappa. While we give careful consideration to legacies given their knowledge of and exposure to Kappa, the recruits who best demonstrate Kappa qualities are most likely to get bids on Bid Day. When membership selection occurs, a woman's character is most important to us.

  • What are Kappas looking for in their recruits?

We look for women who display qualities of leadership, scholarship, and friendship (the three ideals of Kappa), with compassion for her friends and a desire to help in her community. It is also important to us to have members with different backgrounds and experiences, so we look for potential new members with a wide variety of academic and extracurricular interests.
